Digital technology helped find an ancient city in southern Kazakhstan

An ancient city has been discovered in southern Kazakhstan — and the main instrument of discovery was digital technology: analysis of satellite imagery and geodata revealed regular contours of walls and streets beneath the steppe surface, invisible to ground inspection. The territory was no blank spot: expeditions had walked these places for decades, but only an algorithm comparing data from different surveys could see the structure.

The story is beautiful in itself, but it carries a precise business lesson: the discovery was made not on new data but on old data, reviewed many times. Algorithms can extract signal where the human gaze sees uniform noise — and that property doesn't depend on whether we face a steppe or a sales table.

Most companies in Kazakhstan have their own "unexcavated cities": years of sales history, thousands of calls, operation logs, warehouse balances. Everyone has long been "walking over" this data — viewing the same reports with the same breakdowns. The practical step is to let AI sweep the accumulated mass in a free search for patterns: seasonalities absent from reports, product bundles, procurement anomalies, customers with predictable churn. The data is already collected and paid for — leaving it unexcavated is bad economics.
